Austin Trip

Last Wednesday, Jackie and I took a trip down to Austin to see the sights and enjoy the weather. Believe it or not both of our flights on Wednesday were not only on-time but we actually got into Austin early. While Jeet finished class Jackie and I walked around campus. We eventually hooked up and got the official tour. We got dinner at Trudy’s (not only for the great Tex-Mex but also the $3 margaritas). The evening of the first night concluded with us drinking Captain and Cokes and smoking cigars on the porch at Jeet’s apartment. Look at what has happened to Jeet from having been in Texas too long.

Day two took Jackie and I to San Antonio. We left Austin in the morning and headed to the Alamo. We were both surprised to find it in the center of the city. After that, we headed to the Riverwalk to check out the restaurants and bars along the way. We also checked out the baby ducks that were with their mothers. That night we went to Saltlicks and had all you can eat BBQ meat. Yes, it was as delicious as it sounds.

Day three started out with breakfast at Kirby Lane’s in Austin. Jackie, Jeet, and I were able to hook up with Csilla Lyerly who lives in Pflugerville, TX. Jackie went through flight school with Csilla’s husband Sean. Sean was flying a mission in Iraq a year ago this past January when his Blackhawk was shot down and he was killed. It was so nice to be able to spend time with not only Csilla but with her son Zack too. After we had breakfast we went kyaking on Lady Bird Lake (formally Town Lake) in Austin. We had a great time and got too much sun! Necks, arms, and legs were very toasty by the end of the day. After kyaking we headed to the Austin botanical gardens. It was a nice relaxing afternoon and everyone had a great time. In the early evening we headed up to Killeen to see our buddy Randy. We ate at Texas Land and Cattle that evening and then relaxed with a couple of drinks and cigars.

Our final day in Texas started out eating breakfast at a local diner. That was an experience to say the least. We weren’t in Austin anymore! After that we went to Cavenders, which is a western clothing store. I purchased my fist official cowboy hat. Unfortunately, I don’t have a picture. After that, we headed to Ft. Hood to check out post and let Jeet see an Apache up close. In fact, he was able to sit in both the front and back seats. Again, unfortunately we did not have a camera. We spent the rest of the day cooking ribs at Randy’s house. He makes some of the best ribs that we have ever had. We had to leave early to get back to Austin since our flight left the next morning at 6:10 am.

It was a great trip and it was so nice to be able to see Jeet, Randy, and Csilla. It had been a few years since we last saw Randy and Csilla. Hopefully it won’t be as long until the next time. Jeet only has a couple weeks of school left and then he will be back in the Burgh enjoying his summer. Thanks to Jeet for showing us around and keeping us entertained!
